Victoria Ave Regina coelorum or YouTube SSAATTBB
Ave Regina coelorum is the Marian antiphon prescribed by the Council of Trent to be sung between Candlemas (5 February) and Easter.
Ramsey Sleep, fleshly birth or YouTube Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SSATTB
Written in mourning for Prince Henry, the 18 year-old eldest son of James I, who died in 1612. Ramsey was the Director of Music at Trinity College, Cambridge at the time.
Vautor Mother, I will have a husband or YouTube Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SSATB
Vautor, well known for Sweet Suffolk Owl, was a master of light madrigals. There is much wit in this light-hearted and energetic portrayal of wilful adolescence. It is largely homophonic, but there are some interesting excursions, especially during the 'gad' into town ('to get a husband, good or bad') and at the inevitable kissing!
Weelkes Thule, the period of cosmography and The Andalusian merchant or YouTube (both pieces) Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SSATB
My favourite madrigal! - a veritable geographical tour of the world's volcanic wonders and a great piece to look at in this distanced way. The next best thing to going on holiday! We'll look out for some fabulous scene-setting and word-painting on our travels.
Tomkins Fusca, in thy starry eyes or YouTube SSATB
The text is dedicated to 'Mr Phineas Fletcher' and has a link to one of his poetic characters. Look out for the mock pathos of 'so many slain', the capricious 'thou has loved none again' and the coquettish fa-las.
